Review Your Goals: The Key to Staying Adaptable and Successful

Reviewing your goals is just as crucial as planning them. Over time, circumstances shift, and new information comes to light that can impact our original plans. This means that it’s essential to revisit your goals regularly, adjusting them as needed, or in some cases, discarding them altogether.

Take, for instance, someone who lived in Norway in 2012. Their career goal may have been to become an engineer in the oil industry. However, after the fall in oil prices in 2014 and subsequent layoffs, they might have reconsidered this path in 2015, switching to a different career altogether.

The same concept applies to business planning. If you were targeting the Norwegian market with a product and expected growth, you might have had to reevaluate that strategy as market conditions changed. The good news, however, is that while one market might not perform as expected, other countries may offer opportunities due to shifts in external factors, such as increased purchasing power driven by lower oil prices.

The important takeaway is not to fear changing or even abandoning goals. The only constant in life and business is change. Our goals must evolve to reflect these changes. Holding on to outdated goals can be detrimental. It’s not what we don’t know that can hurt us, but rather what we think we know that is no longer true. By staying open to new information and adjusting our goals accordingly, we set ourselves up for more informed decision-making and a higher likelihood of success.
